- Nvidia and Microsoft top the list of founding members of the Open Secure AI Alliance
- AI, financial services, technology companies and other organizations developing AI services have joined the alliance.
- Notable exceptions include OpenAI, Anthropic and Google
Nvidia has confirmed its membership in the new Open Secure AI Alliance, a collective of leading technology, finance and AI companies working collaboratively to ensure the openness of the AI sector. Oddly, however, while Microsoft and OpenClaw are among the founding members, Google, OpenAI and Anthropic are not.
Inspired by the open source movement and the Akrites AI cyber threat response initiative led by the Linux Foundation, the Open Secure AI Alliance aims to use open technologies to disclose and remediate vulnerabilities.
Citing the recent Hugging Face incident, in which closed AI tools prevented a full investigation of the event, the Open Secure AI Alliance’s founding announcement highlights the importance of open models, emphasizing how cybersecurity is a major beneficiary of open source software.
A response with a hug?
A large group of recognizable companies are involved in the Open Secure AI Alliance, including OpenClaw, Palantir, Palo Alto Networks, Microsoft, Crowdstrike, IBM, Linux Foundation, and Hugging Face.
Among this list, we can cite Google and Palantir, and of course OpenAI, responsible for the Hugging Face attack. Given that this event occurred during a cybersecurity benchmark test and OpenAI’s model carried out a fully automated attack on Hugging Face’s servers, it serves as an important demonstration of the risks associated with closed models in the AI world.
“When defenders cannot inspect, adapt, and run advanced AI on their own infrastructure, their ability to respond is limited exactly when speed matters most,” says the Open Secure AI Alliance, which highlights its mission: “to ensure that defenders everywhere have open, frontier tools they can trust and control.”
OpenAI’s lack of openness about the incident and Hugging Face’s initial difficulties in analyzing the intrusion due to closed models really highlight the importance of this new alliance.
Open vs Closed
The debate over open and closed software models isn’t likely to stop anytime soon, but the Open Secure AI Alliance is certainly a strong point in support of open models. Yes, they can be a risk that can be modified or misused, but these risks exist within closed systems.
The alliance’s goal is therefore to give defenders the tools necessary to deal with threats, rather than blocking these tools. After all, decades of cybersecurity research have shown that the best option is collaboration and testing — or, as the Open Secure AI Alliance states, “the safest path is one that gives more defenders the ability to test, verify, and harden the systems that society relies on.”
Given OpenAI’s role in the Hugging Face incident, its absence makes sense – but what about Google and Anthropic? At a time when collaboration between companies is driving the development of new technologies under strict standards (for example, the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s work with Matter and Aliro), it seems that the Open Secure AI Alliance has the right idea.
