A whole new subclass is coming for Dungeons and Dragons very soon, and it may already be a Dungeon Master’s next big tabletop nightmare. The TTRPG is seeing many new updates this year, particularly following the announcement of roadmap for Dungeons and Dragons in 2026which includes the Ravenloft: The Horrors Within sourcebook in June and the Unleashed Arcana expansion in a few months. For now, everyone is looking forward to the character options and campaign settings offered by the new Ravenloft book.
However, perhaps it is time to look a little further into the future. While Ravenloft: The Horrors Within expected to arrive in June with many new subclasses, September will be the month where Unleashed Arcana is released, featuring several character options that have yet to be confirmed by Wizards of the Coast. Nonetheless, there is one potential subclass observed during last year’s playtesting of arcane subclasses on D&D beyondThe Unearthed Arcana that may deserve your attention.
Ancestral witchcraft subclass for wizards in D&D is a brand new addition to the TTRPG, and it’s likely that it will be added with Unleashed Arcana in September. Described in playtesting as a character whose “innate magic comes from a specific ancestor” who used powerful magic, ancestral wizards are designed to disrupt DMs. At early levels they may look like a standard wizard, but everything changes at level 6.
With the Greater Spell Disruption feat, Counterspell and Dispel Magic are always prepared, and when using innate sorcery, they can cast each spell for free. Additionally, Counterspells cast this way impose Disadvantage on the target’s Constitution saving throw, while Dispel Magic cast this way gives you Advantage in ending current spells. Even if Counterspell has been nerfed D&D 2024this makes the spell much more valuable.
At level 14, Elder Wizards also unlock the Steady Spellcaster feat, which allows them to maintain focus on wizard spells even if they take damage. This is a powerful ability locked behind high level, but one that shouldn’t be overlooked at all. Finally, 18th-level ancestral wizards gain the Protection of the Ancestors feat, which allows them to gain advantage on all saving throws while using innate sorcery.
Once per use of Innate Sorcery, they can also choose to succeed on a saving throw if they fail. None of this is revolutionary like the new Hollow Warden subclass for Rangersbut it will definitely entertain your DM as their efforts continue to be undone. It is not yet known whether what is described in the tests will carry over into the final version, but it may be worth keeping this new version. Dungeons and Dragons subclass on your radar.
