Following the Trump directive which led Anthropic to take its latest AI models offline and growing calls for sovereign technology that reduces dependence on the United States, Mistral AI was caught in a whirlwind of attention. But the darling of French AI is often misunderstood, and the fact that it develops large linguistic models (LLM) has muddied the picture.
Anyone judging Mistral based on its ability to become “Europe’s OpenAI” is likely to be disappointed. His cat and his agent Vibe, formerly The Cathas just an ounce of ChatGPT brand recognition, and Claude is more popular than Mistral’s models even among founders based at Station F, the Paris startup campus.
On the other hand, casual observers tend to forget that the French decacorn follows the Palantir playbook, with engineers deployed at the forefront helping governments and large companies adopt AI and adapt it to their use cases.
This approach is also better suited to Mistral’s resources. While the company is rumored to be raising some $3.5 billion for a valuation of $23.15 billionalmost doubling its current valuation, it is still much less than the American border laboratories. But his income has also increased; in February it revealed that its annual recurring revenue was now above $400 millionup from $20 million a year earlier, and claimed it was on track to surpass $1 billion in ARR this year.
This has allowed Mistral to earn a seat at the negotiating table in places like Davos, and even in rooms where tech CEOs struggle to get their message across, e.g. the French Parliament. Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral, becomes a public ambassador of a certain vision of AIbut he still has some evangelizing to do to explain his own business.
In a long LinkedIn PostMensch explained what the Paris-based company does “for a living”: deploying its models and agent platform on its Enterprise customers’ infrastructure and helping them create custom models with Wroughta platform that allows them to use their own data for training.
However, the misunderstandings and the greatest hopes around Mistral do not arise from nothing. Named after a wind, the company pursues a grandiose vision. “We exist to ensure that everyone has access to the best AI systems, outside of centralized control by states or companies that feel the need to control the in-depth deployment of AI,” Mensch wrote.
This vision means that Mistral looks beyond the business. The goal is also to continue investing heavily in research in order to keep pace with its core AI competitors – and Mensch’s post also explains where he thinks the company stands in this regard.
“Today we don’t yet have the best language models, but we have been steadily narrowing that gap. We have a very exciting model coming this summer – it will be open and we will open early access to it in July. In less computational areas, for example voice, vision and document processing, we have cutting-edge solutions,” Mensch asserted.
The next Mistral model has already generated a little buzz on Xwhere Marc Andreessen, partner of Mensch and Mistral, engaged in jokes and amplified memes about what we now know won’t be called “The Fat Kitten.” It’s another sign that the world – especially “the rest of the world” – is watching everything Mistral has up her sleeve.
Perhaps the most interesting part happens behind the scenes. Earlier this year, Mistral acquisition of infrastructure start-up Koyeb to further strengthen its plans to build “a true AI cloud. The company also announced a 4 billion euro investment strategy (around $4.56 billion) to build data centers in France and Sweden – and sovereignty issues are never far away.
“We operate from the premise that AI technology is a core technology that every organization needs in secure and affordable supply,” Mensch wrote. If you’re curious to know more, keep reading.

If Mistral has not yet designed its own chips, Mensch this does not exclude it. “Owning the chips could come, I think it should come at some point, but for now we’re relying on Nvidia, which is a great partner for us, and we’re testing a few things here and there,” he told CNBC.
What could a Mistral AI release look like?
The Mistral is “not for sale” Mensch said this in January 2025 at the World Economic Forum in Davos. “Of course, [an IPO is] the plan.
This makes sense, given the amount the startup has raised so far: even a sale to rumor of potential buyer like Apple may not offer sufficiently high multiples to its investors, not to mention sovereignty problems depending on the buyer.
