Nate Smith opens up about the major lifestyle changes that helped him lose more than 70 pounds and why he’s not done yet. The 40-year-old country singer recently reflected on his current weight loss journey, revealing that he has already lost a significant amount of weight and hopes to eventually get below 200 pounds. Although the transformation has improved everything from his stage performances to his self-confidence, Nate Smith admitted the journey began after a serious health issue forced him to take a hard look at his habits.
Nate Smith has already lost over 70 pounds

Speaking to PEOPLE magazine at Sports Illustrated and Tight End University’s Tight Ends & Friends concert at the Pinnacle in Nashville, Smith said he’s still working toward his ultimate goal.
“I think I want to be under 200 pounds,” he said. “So I was around 275 pounds, somewhere in this world. But I want to get back down to 185 pounds.”
The “Bulletproof” singer said losing weight dramatically changed his physical and emotional feelings. Not only is he healthier, but he also notices a difference in his daily activities and even in the clothes he wears. “I feel better. It’s nice to be able to wear clothes that I like,” Smith said.
Referring to the shirt he wore during the interview, he added: “It’s a size large. I’ve been a double X for five or six years, so I feel really good.”
Country star says weight loss improved his performance

Beyond aesthetics, Smith revealed that one of his biggest motivations for losing weight was his desire to perform at his best for fans. “Keeping the energy on stage” is important to him “because I think it takes care of the fans,” he explained.
The singer said the physical benefits have become impossible to ignore. “I’m not sweating anymore, which is amazing. I was completely out of breath tying my shoes,” Smith admitted.
But now, he noted, “I can jump a lot more.” The increased stamina allowed him to bring more energy to his live performances while making daily life easier.
A serious health crisis became a turning point for Nate Smith

Smith’s decision to overhaul his lifestyle came after a scary upper respiratory infection in November 2024. The health issues forced him to re-evaluate both his eating habits and alcohol consumption.
According to PEOPLE, Smith previously admitted that he knew his habits were negatively affecting his health, but had trouble knowing where to start.
“I knew I was hurting myself, but I couldn’t stop. It was like looking at this mountain and wondering, ‘How can I get there?'” I didn’t even know where to start.
Determined to make a change, Smith reduced his alcohol intake and focused on increasing his protein intake as part of a broader commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The changes have produced dramatic results. By simply adjusting her eating and drinking habits, the country star reportedly lost 55 pounds in just four months.
Nate Smith stays honest about his ongoing struggles

Although Smith celebrated major progress, he doesn’t pretend the journey has been perfect.
The singer candidly admitted that he still occasionally suffers from binge eating and continues to strive to maintain a healthier relationship with food. “I still struggle with overeating. And if I want to have it, I will,” he admitted.
However, he changed the way he approached indulgences. “I want to find a way to make it a treat rather than a lifestyle,” he shared. “If I decide to eat mac and cheese, that’s okay.”
Rather than striving for perfection, Smith said he focuses on creating lasting habits that allow him to enjoy his favorite foods in moderation.
Nate Smith says he’s happier than he’s been in years

Although the singer still hopes to lose weight, he says the progress he’s already made has transformed both his health and his self-confidence.
In 2025, Smith acknowledged he still has work to do before reaching his goal weight. “I’m not even close to my goal,” he said at the time. “But I’m much happier where I am, and I feel better about the way I look.”
Now, more than 70 pounds lighter, Smith continues to progress toward his next step while enjoying the improvements he’s already made along the way.
