Travis Kelce is accused of being an influence chaser after a 2016 interview resurfaces, in which he chose to kiss Taylor Swift and get married Katy Perry during a game of “Marry, Kiss, Kill”.
The throwback moment amused fans on social media, especially in light of the NFL star’s recent marriage to Swift. Some have gone so far as to argue that Kelce and Swift are a suitable couple, as both seem comfortable chasing and embracing attention.
Travis Kelce once chose Katy Perry over Taylor Swift

An old interview featuring Travis Kelce has resurfaced online, giving fans a glimpse into his thoughts on Taylor Swift years before the pair became one of pop culture’s biggest couples. The clip, originally filmed during an appearance on AfterBuzz TV in 2016, made the rounds on social media after being shared by TMZ.
In the interview, Kelce participated in a game of “Marry, Kiss, Kill,” choosing between Swift, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande. He reluctantly chose Grande to “kill,” said he would kiss Swift, and chose to marry Perry.
It seems even more full circle now, following Swift and Kelce’s lavish July 3 wedding at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where the couple exchanged vows in front of a star-studded guest list.
The ceremony was officiated by Adam Sandler, with Kelce’s brother Jason Kelce as best man and Swift’s brother Austin Swift as best man.
Old clip revives new claims of influence
The resurfaced clip also reignited a familiar debate about Kelce’s long-running quest for glory beyond football. While many fans mocked the irony of his old “Marry, Kiss, Kill” responses, others argued that the interview was another example of the NFL star’s desire to create a celebrity profile long before meeting Swift.
Some have called Kelce an “influence chaser,” with one fan on Reddit saying the football star had “always wanted to be more famous than an NFL player usually is.” Another argued that his relationship with Swift made the couple a “perfect match” as they both enjoy life in the spotlight.
However, not everyone agrees with the criticism. Several commenters dismissed the new scrutiny, pointing out that Kelce was simply participating in light play and “treating the issue as seriously as it deserved.”
Inside Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Lavish MSG Wedding
Swift and Kelce were apparently determined to make their wedding anything but ordinary, transforming Madison Square Garden into a stunning venue for their big day. According to PEOPLE, the famous New York arena has been transformed with trees, ferns and seats covered in white, making the space feel like an indoor forest.
After the couple exchanged vows, guests moved to the reception area, where the celebration continued with food, drinks and live music. Attendees were treated to Italian dishes, sushi, past bites, and plenty of bars throughout the venue.
The evening also featured performances from great music legends, including Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks.
Paul McCartney performed a rare Beatles classic at the wedding

According to the PEOPLE report, McCartney performed the Beatles classic “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” This was after Swift’s mother, Andrea, invited guests into the reception room, where a stage had been set up. Stevie Nicks was also on the A list.
McCartney’s performance was particularly significant because he has rarely performed the song live in recent decades.
Entertainment Weekly reported that the wedding marked the first time he played the Beatles’ hit live since 1964, making the moment even more historic for guests.
Donna Kelce calls Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s marriage ‘magical’

Donna Kelce was among those with a front row seat to one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the year as she watched her son exchange vows with Swift at MSG on July 3.
The next day, Donna attended Macy’s July 50th celebration in New York. When asked about the celebrity wedding, Travis and Jason Kelce’s mother kept her reaction brief but vivid.
“I really can’t say much about it except it was magical, man, magical,” she said, as previously reported by The Blast.
In 2023, shortly after the couple began dating, Donna expressed pride that her son was able to convince Swift to date him. “He’s happier than I’ve seen him in a long time,” she said. “God bless him. He shot for the stars!”
