Although many literary works in the science fiction genre have helped shape cyberpunk’s distinct identity, William Gibson is credited with laying much of its foundation through Neuromancer. Surprisingly, despite his incredible influence, Neuromancer never reached the screens. Many of its adaptations have been planned in the past, but none have fully come to fruition.
Fortunately, this is finally changing.
With Apple TV Neuromancer, William Gibson’s novel now has the potential to join the ranks among other iconic cyberpunk adaptations as Blade Runner, Ghost in the shellAnd Modified carbon. Given the influence of its source material, it should come as no surprise that many successful franchises as The Matrix greatly benefited from it.
After all these years, it is fascinating that NeuromancerThe television adaptation of now echoes the cyberpunk films and shows its once inspired novel.
Neuromancer’s new key art is reminiscent of one of the Matrix headjacks
That of William Gibson Neuromancer was one of the first works of science fiction to popularize the idea of ”plug in.“The concept of directly connecting the human brain to cyberspace via a neural interface is a well-known science fiction trope today. However, in 1984, when Neuromancer was published for the first time, his portrait of “hook up” was incredibly distinct and new.
Therefore, it should not be surprising that the Neuromancer The series’ key art depicts its main character, Chase (Callum Turner), plugging a neural implant behind his ear.
Viewers who are less familiar with William Gibson’s novel and associate the cyberpunk subgenre with The matrix You’ll notice how the neural jack bears a striking resemblance to Neo’s headjack in the movies. Neo’s headjack in The matrix is located behind his skull, allowing humans like him to connect to the titular simulated reality.

New Neuromancer trailer recalls Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner
Two years before that of William Gibson Neuromancer was published, Ridley Scott Blade Runner landed in theaters in 1982.
