2023: Afenifere leader blesses Tinubu's presidential ambition

Despite some misgivings in Afenifere over Bola Tinubu's candidacy, the national leader of the pan-Yoruba group, Reuben Fasoranti, on Sunday welcomed the APC presidential candidate and offered his blessing ahead of the 2023 ballot.< /p>

The climax of the event, held at Mr. Fasoranti's country house in Akure, saw Mr. Tinubu kneel before the nonagenarian who placed his hands on his head and offered prayers.

Mr Tinubu's visit to the Afenifere leader comes amid pledges by some members of the group to support Peter Obi, the Labor Party presidential candidate, on regional "justice and equity" grounds.< /p>

One of the leaders of the Ayo Adebanjo group clarified that the decision to support Mr. Obi was in line with the group's ideological and fair principles.

This was after Mr. Tinubu accused him of making Afenifere his "personal property" as acting chief.

Mr. Tinubu was received at the airport by Ondo State Deputy Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa; the party's state chairman, Ade Adetimehin; and other party leaders.

During the courtesy visit on Sunday, Mr. Tinubu told his host that he had visited him several times in the past.

His last visit was in July 2019, when he came to complain to him about the death of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, who was ambushed and killed by gunmen on her way to Lagos.< /p> READ ALSO:

He admitted that there were disagreements between the group members, but said that since democracy is a numbers game, it was necessary to be "strategic" and "tactical" in order to be able to win the presidential election next year.< /p>

He said he needed the votes of the South West and a significant part of the North to emerge victorious as was the case in 2015 and 2019.

He thanked Mr. Fasoranti for his tremendous leadership in the South West.

"Our leaders have been through this path, you have walked through it for us, we will follow you," he added.

Mr. Tinubu is expected to present its action plan document later on how to reposition the country towards broader Afenifere leadership.

The 80-page plan, dubbed Renewed Hope, was first launched in Abuja on October 21 by President Muhammadu Buhari.
