2023: Atiku Abubakar pays lip service to national unity - APC Campaign Council

The All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Says Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is Paying Only Lip Service to National Unity . Bayo Onanuga, the council's director, media and publicity, said in Abuja on Sunday that Atiku resorted to ethnic jingo in the face of impending defeat in the 2023 elections.

He said Atiku's recent statement that northern Nigerians do not need a Yoruba or Igbo president was the worst expression of ethnocentric opportunism ever uttered by a former vice president.

“This clearly shows how a man once honored with the second highest office is willing to sink in search of an eternal wild goose chase after the highest office in the land.

“It confirms that Abubakar fed on these cheap and low primal sentiments to use the masses and northern elites as a ladder to ascend to power in 1999 with no dividends to show,” Onanuga said .

Mr. Onanuga quoted Atiku as saying, "What the average northerner needs is someone from the north who understands this part of the country and has been able to build bridges across the country.

"This is what the northerner needs; he does not need a Yoruba or Igbo candidate. I stand before you as a Pan-Nigerian of northern origin.''

He argued that with this statement, Atiku presented himself as a northern candidate who should only be supported by people in his region.

He pointed out that Atiku's public statement that presented him as an ethnic and regional champion was unbecoming of a man who was once a former vice president of Nigeria.

He added that the CCP was not surprised at Atiku's desperate stance, saying he had resorted to stirring up ethnic feelings, knowing his chances in 2023 had become a mirage.

"He has himself and no one else to blame for his expected electoral misfortune. First, he broke the fundamental rules of the rotation of power in his party and in the country.

"As if this cardinal sin were not enough, the PDP candidate remained defiant in the face of pressure by preserving his party's two highest positions for people from his region.

"The Nigerian public now knows better than a man who campaigned as the so-called unifier of our disparate groups is a tribal chauvinist.

“He has now totally eviscerated any pretense of being a detribalized Nigerian.

He added that Nigerians of good will, who daily seek a united and prosperous nation, should reject Atiku and his party in the February 2023 elections.

“Abubakar only pays lip service to national unity despite it being listed as one of the five cardinal points of his so-called pact with Nigerians.

“The facade has been blown away. He is now fully naked in front of the Nigerian people,” the APC's CCP Media and Publicity Director pointed out.
