Election 2023: US Government Supports Campaigns to Address Voter Apathy

The Vote023 initiative, which aims to reduce voter apathy in the 2023 general election, has received support from the United States government through its embassy in Nigeria.

According to Ochu-Baiye, the embassy confirmed its support for the initiative in a federal aid award notice issued on December 15 to Emeka Mba, a technology entrepreneur and founder of Emergent Labs.

Ochu-Baiye said, "The Vote023 team is thrilled that the US Embassy in Nigeria is partnering with us to deliver our messages to thousands of Nigerians through our recorded IVR messages in English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and Pidgin.

"We greatly appreciate their support and it will go a long way toward achieving the project's goals."

Ochu-Baiye says the aim of Vote023 is to tackle the troubling problem of voter apathy by creatively educating Nigerians and giving them compelling reasons to participate in the upcoming elections in 2023.

She explained that the goal was to increase voter turnout by deepening citizens' awareness of their civic duty.

According to Ochu-Baiye, the project emphasized ideals and data rather than being associated with any personality or political party.

Mba, visionary and solution architect of the campaign, said, “We launched Vote023 in November 2022 to promote voting culture in Nigeria.

"This assistance from the U.S. Embassy is a great boost to our campaign efforts.

Mba called on other institutions and well-meaning Nigerians to follow the lead of the US Embassy in supporting the initiative.

He said the project targets over 23 million Nigerians with 23 compelling reasons to vote in the 2023 elections.
