2023: PDP goes spiritual as pastors, imams pray in rain in Ogun

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) of Ogun State pleaded before God in their prayers during the 2023 general election as clergy knelt in prayer under a heavy downpour in Abeokuta.< /p>

The prayer session took place at the PDP party secretariat, a stone's throw from Governor Dapo Abiodun's office.

During the session, party members and clergy who defied the rain prayed crusade-style to seek God's support even as campaigns and elections drew closer.

Members, who specifically targeted their prayers for the party's victory at the polls, also prayed against the divisive antics of the ruling political party, especially in the state.

Speaking at the event, party secretary Sunday Solarin said "although the All Progressives Congress, APC, has been rejected by the people, the party must guard against possible spiritual forces that might want to disrupt the plans already put in place by the PDP.”

He further noted that the idea of the prayer session had been raised by women leaders of the party, noting that the idea was the first of its kind in the party in Ogun State.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Stateswomen leader Remilekun Olusoji said prayer has become a necessity to guard against evil eventualities during and after campaigns.

“As you have noticed, during the interfaith prayers, we implored the face of God and his protection before the start of the campaigns. We also sought the face of God for peace and love in our party.

“We also asked for victory for all our candidates in the elections. This happened after I had a dream that required us to pray together as a party, so we did and we are now confident of victory at the polls."

The party's gubernatorial candidate, Ladipupo Adebutu, said that if he contested to enrich himself with public funds, he would have withdrawn from the race given the stress that comes with consultations and possible campaigns .

"My heart was filled with pain when we started this journey a few years ago, they looked at me as 'that little Ladi'. That 'little Ladi' has now become a big Ladi. We can't thank God or pray him enough, but with that we did, may God accept our supplications.

"The next time we meet for this kind of gathering, it will be for Thanksgiving."
