2023: Peter Obi promises to dismantle “the political structure that has impoverished Nigerians”

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has pledged to build a better Nigeria by “dismantling the political structure” which he says has driven millions of Nigerians into poverty.

Mr. Obi said this Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, when speaking to reporters ahead of his campaign in the state on Tuesday.

Many Nigerians, including People's Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, had said Mr Obi could not win the 2023 elections because the LP lacked the necessary political structure across Nigeria.

Mr. Obi was Atiku's running mate in the 2019 presidential election on the PDP platform.

He was also one of the PDP's presidential hopefuls for the 2023 elections, but later defected to the LP where he chose the party ticket.

According to Sahara Reporters, Atiku said in July that LP had no structure but only existed on social media.

Mr. Atiku, outlining what he meant by political structure, said Mr. Obi cannot win the presidential race because the LP has no governor, federal and state legislators.

Atiku's view was reinforced by political adviser to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Collins Cocodia and Mr. Soludo, Governor of Anambra, Mr. Obi's home state, who claimed that Mr. Obi's victory in the presidential elections was close to zero.

"The structure they have today is what we want to dismantle. It's a structure of crime," Obi told Uyo, in response to a reporter's question about the " lack of structure" of the comments of his political opponents.

"It is the structure that has produced 133 million people living in poverty, 20 million children out of school and which has allowed Nigeria to overtake India in child mortality.

“It is the structure that destroys us and we want to destroy this structure. And you are the next structure. We want to build a better place for our children,” Mr. Obi said.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Nigeria has approximately 20 million out-of-school children.

This figure places the country second in the world after India with such records.

Mr. Obi, former governor of Anambra State, attributed the high number of out-of-school children to the existing political structure which he said would be replaced by a new one.

Reacting to Mr. Obi's response to questions during the interaction, state reporter Ndifreke Enefiok said the LP presidential candidate failed to address key issues such as poverty, energy, women's participation in politics and governance and people w...
