2023: Tinubu promises to create a national agricultural products directorate

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu has promised to create a National Agricultural Commodities Directorate, if elected in 2023.

This, he said, would help reposition the agricultural sector for optimal growth.

Mr. Tinubu made this known during a public meeting with farmers and northern agricultural produce groups on Monday in Minna, the capital of Niger state.

He said the management would be responsible for providing necessary agricultural tools to farmers at subsidized rates.

He explained that agricultural tools would be made available at government-controlled prices in the country's 774 local government areas.

The APC presidential candidate also promised that his administration would launch the commodity exchange upon taking office and also ensure full protection of farmers and their produce.

"Rest assured that you will have all the necessary protection in the market and the farms.

“Therefore we promise you that commodity trading will commence immediately if you elect me as President of Nigeria,” he said

Mr. Tinubu also pledged to revamp the Agriculture Bank to focus on farmers first while pledging to ensure climate change mitigation.

"We promise that nothing you produce will ever be destroyed again.

"I sympathize with all of you affected by the floods across the country." he said.

Also speaking at the event, Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State said the government has over the years continued to support the development of agriculture in the areas of production plant, animal and fish.

He noted that the current administration has reactivated some of the state's 19 moribund irrigation systems as well as the rehabilitation of more than 300 km of rural access roads through the implementation of the project program Access and Mobility in Rural Areas (RAMP II).

Mr. Bello said the state has attracted five international investors for the production log and other related livestock products.

He added that the government had developed more than 1,300 hectares of pasture plots with basic facilities for the project.

The event was attended by APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, Director General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State and Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State, among other dignitaries.
