In a tweet on Friday, Mr Adebanjo said the group opposed the candidacy of Bola Tinubu, a Yoruba, who is the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the former governor of Lagos State will continue the current administration.

"Ahmed Tinubu will only follow up on Buhari's incompetence. We know Peter Obi very well, that's why we support him. He will not disappoint Nigerians, let's put aside our tribal difference and vote the good ones leaders,” the tweet read.

The group previously declared its support for the Labor Party presidential candidate, Mr Obi, an Igbo and former governor of Anambra State, on the grounds that it is the turn of the geopolitical south-east from the country.

“Yes, we supported Peter Obi. My reason for supporting him is that on the basis of fairness and justice, the presidency should go to the South East,” Mr. Adebanjo had said a while ago. a few weeks.

Mr. Tinubu and Afenifere have a long history. In 1999, the former contested and won the election for governorship of Lagos State under the Democracy Alliance, a political party of Afenifere. He was re-elected in 2003 under the same party.

A disagreement within the Alliance for Democracy (AD) led Mr Tinubu and his allies to form the Action Congress (AC), which later morphed into the Action Congress (ACN) and joined the party. Atiku Abubakar, who is the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), was the CA presidential candidate in the 2007 elections.

Since Mr. Tinubu left the AD, there has been no love lost between him and Afenifere.
