76 presumed dead as boat capsizes in Anambra

A motor boat loaded with about 85 passengers capsized and killed no less than 76 people on board.

The ill-fated boat, which had around 85 people on board, was found to have taken off from Onukwu bridge and was heading towards Nkwo market, Ogbakuba in the local government area of Ogbaru, Anambra State, before it capsized.

The incident happened early Saturday morning.

According to sources, only nine people have been rescued while the others have not yet been seen.

While the details of the incident are still unclear, meanwhile, unconfirmed official sources from a State Emergency Management Authority official said the incident had occurred on Saturday morning.

He said: "It happened. A motorboat which was carrying about 85 passengers at Onukwu bridge in Ossomala en route to Nkwo Ogbakuba market capsized this morning. Only nine passengers been rescued, the others have not yet been seen.

"I wasn't there when the boat loaded, but the information we got off the record is that it loaded 85."
