80 young people benefit from free ICT training

First group of 80 young people from the Niger Delta graduate from the free information and communication technology training program organized by the National Spokesperson's Office of the Ijaw Youth Council .

The intensive training covered areas such as computer appreciation, office productivity tools and internet utilities as well as web development (HTML, CSS and Bootstrap).

The top 12 graduating recipients received brand new laptops while others received their starter packs before the start of the second batch of the training program in February 2023.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Friday, Governor Douye Diri congratulated the Spokesperson of the IYC for supporting government efforts in ICT skills training for young people.

Diri, represented by Ijaw National Affairs Commissioner Patrick Erasmus, said the laudable empowerment program would steer young people away from criminal activities and allow them to focus on development and peace.

He frowned at the attitude of some recipients of government-organized training who did not put the knowledge learned into practice but instead sold their starter packs, urging graduates to help themselves with the ICT skills they had learned.

“I would like to commend Ebilade Ekerefe for complementing the government's efforts in this regard. It was not easy for him to set this up,” he said.

In his remarks, the President of the occasion and President of the Ijaw National Congress, Professor Benjamin Okaba said that ICT training was one of the responses to claims by multinational oil companies that the Ijaw nation had made no skilled labor.

He noted that the Ijaw could take their rightful place in the oil and gas sector by acquiring the necessary education and training.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Council of Traditional Leaders of the State, King Bubaraye Dakolo, applauded the initiator of the program and urged the beneficiaries to use the knowledge they had acquired to "commit and soar".

The IYC spokesperson explained that the initiative aims to change the Ijaw Nation's narrative of struggle, pointing out that instead of adopting a rehearsed combatant approach, which had given less results, it was necessary to deploy an intellectual approach.

He further stated, "I have observed that in the digital age, young Ijaw and locals should not be left behind and allow multinational oil companies to continue in their lame excuse of not employing the youth of the Niger Delta due to poor knowledge of ICT.
