Our enduring love affair with Britain's great holiday park began in Victorian times - with the opening of Camp Cunningham on the Isle of Man in 1894 - and really flourished after World War II.

It was thanks to tourism entrepreneurs such as Billy Butlin, Fred Pontin and Wally B. Hoseason who embraced the concept of providing inexpensive accommodation and lots of family activities and running with it. Over 120 years later, classic British holidays are still a cost-effective way to enjoy some of the UK's most popular sights.

In the meantime , the quality of rooms has steadily improved. It is now possible to stay in converted shepherd's huts, static caravans and glamping tents in some parks - many of which have pet-friendly policies.

Expect entertainment galore for the whole family, with heated pools, mini-golf and West End-style cabarets.
