Abia will hold municipal elections in April

Following the approval to hold municipal elections on 28 April 2023 in Abia State, the Independent State Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) released the schedule of activities.

The chairman of the state electoral body, Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa, made this known during a stakeholder meeting with the chairmen and representatives of political parties in the state, which s is held at ABSIEC headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital.

He assured them of the Commission's desire to organize free, fair and credible municipal elections, and urged members of political parties, as well as their supporters, to limit themselves to any form of violence likely to affect votes.

He said the collection of prescribed forms for the election by political parties would begin from February 15 to 28, while the party primaries would be held from February 10 to March 9, 2023.

According to him, the submission of candidate names to ABSIEC by political parties will take place from February 16 to March 13, while the pre-selection of candidates by the Commission will be held from March 20 to 27.

He added that political party campaigns would start on March 28.

While thanking the Commission for its achievements under Mkpa's leadership and for finding it fit to hold council elections, the political party representatives urged the Commission to ensure a level playing field for the parties of state in elections.
