Adegboruwa dares DSS on CBN Governor Emefiele

Rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has challenged the Department of State Services (DSS) to press charges against Godwin Emefiele.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is facing allegations of terrorist financing, embezzlement of income, agricultural loans and fraudulent practices in Forex transactions.

In a statement on Monday, Adegboruwa said a public official cannot be above any investigation or the law if there is indeed a reason for which he must answer.

The lawyer recalled how the DSS had sought a court order to arrest and investigate Emefiele, but he was "very embarrassed".

"It's better if everything is clear and open to the Nigerian people," advised the Senior Advocate for Nigeria (SAN).

Adegboruwa admitted that the “various crises” surrounding the CBN governor do not speak well for the economy.

He stressed, however, that there should be no persecution or undue arrest of anyone without lawful cause or justification.

Adegboruwa argues that the DSS does not require a citizen's arrest to file a complaint in court if there really is an allegation.

The SAN said the issues of alleged stamp duty and sponsorship of terrorism "are documentary", adding that the charges "will compel the appearance (in court) of the accused".

“There is therefore no need to see the seemingly endless drama between Mr. Emefiele, the DSS and the presidency, unless of course it is part of the hidden agenda,” he said. he added.
