Adeleke freezes government accounts and revokes state name

The new governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has frozen all government accounts in the state.

Adeleke led this in her first decree at her inauguration on Sunday.

Adeleke, in his inauguration speech, alleged that former state governor Adegboyega Oyetola carried out certain actions "maliciously" after he (Adeleke) won the election Governor's July 16, including "rushed" jobs without provisions to back them up.

He claimed that these actions were obstacles channeled to make things difficult in his administration difficult.

Adeleke also reversed the name of the state from “Osun State” to “Osun State”, saying the former was extraneous to the constitution.

"My people of Osun, since you elected me governor on July 16, 2022, which the Independent National Electoral Commission announced on July 17, 2022, the former governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, has maliciously started to put up roadblocks to make it difficult and nearly impossible for the new administration to serve you.

“Mass employment was achieved without budgetary provision for the payment of salaries of new employees; even when the state struggled to pay salaries and provide other services. Various rushed and criminally backdated contracts were awarded and again without budget provision.

"The appointments of several Obas were hastily made without following due process, to name a few.

"All efforts to get the governor to set up a transition committee and submit best-practice transfer notes have proven futile.

“I therefore wish to ask for your patience and understanding to give my administration a few weeks to review and sort out all of the malicious actions and confusion that the previous administration has created since July 17, 2022. These actions have in fact been vindictive action against the people of Osun State for driving them out,” Adeleke said.

Giving further orders, he said: "Accordingly, I hereby issue the following directives which will be supported by appropriate executive orders:

"Immediate freezing of all public accounts in banks and other financial institutions;

"Immediate establishment of a panel to carry out an inventory and recover all state assets.

"The immediate establishment of a panel to review all appointments and major decisions of the previous administration made after July 17, 2022.

"An immediate reversal of our state's constitutionally recognized name, 'Osun State'. All government insignia, correspondence and signage should now reflect Osun State rather than Osun State which is unknown to the Nigerian constitution."

Adeleke, in his speech, also said he would right the wrongs of past administrations.
