African leaders reaffirm their commitment to integration, development and cooperation

Representing the Bureau of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) and the Chairpersons of the eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs) as well as Regional Mechanisms (RMs), the continent concluded the fifth biannual coordination meeting of the AU in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday with the adoption of a draft declaration. A statement issued by Dele Alake, Special Advisor to the President (Special Tasks, Communications and Strategy) informed that the meeting chaired by President Azali Assoumani of Comoros and the Chairperson of the African Union was attended by President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and the President of ECOWAS, as well as the Presidents of Kenya, Egypt, Gabon, Djibouti, Libya, Senegal and DR Congo.

Leaders expressed support for initiatives to boost connectivity and tourism in Africa, including the implementation of e-visa facilitation.

They also pledged to advocate for the ratification of the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons to effectively support the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agenda.

Continental leaders pledged to support the operationalization and expansion of key initiatives such as the AfCFTA Adjustment Facility, Payments and Settlement System and Guided Trade Initiative, aimed at improving trade facilitation and economic cooperation.

Earlier in the meeting, President Tinubu, in his capacity as President of ECOWAS, presented a comprehensive report on the progress and challenges faced in regional integration.

He stressed ECOWAS's commitment to promoting stability, democracy and economic growth in Africa, highlighting the sub-regional organization's dedication to good governance, the rule of law and values democratic.

Tinubu reaffirmed the will of ECOWAS to actively fight against security challenges, working for the integration and prosperity of the region.
