African Super League gets all clear with $100m pot booked

July 5 - The African Super League will launch in 2023 with a $100 million prize pool, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.

Details of the first continental Super League will be set at a CAF meeting next month in Tanzania, but for now it looks like the tournament will feature 24 clubs from across Africa who will benefit millions of dollars in prizes, with over $10 million to the winner.

At a press conference, CAF boss Patrice Motsepe (pictured) expressed optimism about Super League prospects, citing huge investor interest. He said "the key issue for us is the abnormal interest we have been exposed to from some of the biggest and most important investors and sponsors".

The South African billionaire has repeatedly said that the private sector will support the new competition, but he was once again very shy about the details.

Embolded by the backing of FIFA supremo Gianni Infantino, Motsepe and his board believe Africa can succeed where Europe has failed and launch its own version of the super league.

Infantino first floated the idea in 2019, saying he favored 20 permanent members of the African Super League as well as others who would qualify through regional play-offs. A Super League would also fuel an expanded Club World Cup, plans the pandemic has put on hold.

How the new competition will affect the current African landscape remains unclear, but CAF have confirmed that the Super League will be held at the same time as the Champions League.
