Amosun drops Abiodun for ADC candidate

Former Ogun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun has dumped State Governor Dapo Abiodun for gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Biyi Otegbeye, in 2023 elections.

Abiodun and Amosun are the leaders of the All Progressives Congress.

Abiodun, who succeeded Amosun in 2019, is seeking a second term in 2023 on the APC platform.

Amosun has broken his silence on who he will support in the upcoming elections in the state, saying he will support Otegbeye in the upcoming elections against Abiodun, while he pledged his support for APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu.

He stated his position during an exclusive interview with BBC Yoruba which was followed by the PUNCH correspondent on Monday.

Amosun said: “For the presidential election, I can assure you, right, left and center, we support one person (Tinubu). I believe that we support a person. In the governor's poll, it's a different ball game. I don't belong there.

"Governor's different, I'm not hiding behind a finger to fight. That's why people tell me 'don't say that ". On the governorship, my supporters and I, we do not belong to this camp. I do not support the APC on this side, Biyi Otegbeye is the person I support and the ADC is the party ."

Abiodun and Amosun had been at daggers before the 2019 election over the gubernatorial ticket that went to Abiodun.

Amosun had given his support to his elected candidate, Adekunle Akinlade, who had run on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement.

Akinlade, who lost by 19,000 votes to Abiodun, had however defected to the People's Democratic Party and was nominated as the party's deputy gubernatorial candidate.

Amosun's latest nominee, Otegbeye hails from the senatorial district of Ogun West and is a managing director of Regency Alliance Insurance PLC.
