Anambra government closes casinos and gaming centers

The Anambra State government has ordered the immediate suspension of operations of all casinos and gaming centers in the state.

The directive followed allegations of fraudulent and criminal activity observed in their operations.

This directive was contained in a statement co-signed by the Commissioner for Culture and Entertainment; Tourism, Donatus Onyenji and Chairman, Anambra State Internal Revenue Service; Richard Madiebo and Home Affairs Commissioner Chikodi Angra.

They claimed that the government had received a disturbing number of petitions regarding the manipulation of casino machines and non-transparency in the payment of winnings.

The statement said the allegations amounted to serious abuses of global industry best practices, which the government under Professor Chukwuma Soludo would not tolerate.

He said that the fraudulent practices of gaming centers would no longer be tolerated under the supervision of the current administration.

They said a meeting has been called for all game center agents to address issues of listing and validation of hotel licenses as well as security.

He said that hotel revalidation forms would be distributed on the site for all categories of hotels and tourism businesses and that any hotel that was not profiled or without a hotel license would be closed in accordance to the National Law on Tourism and Hospitality.

The statement read, "This fraudulent practice will not be allowed to flourish under the watchful eye of Professor Chukwuma Soludo's administration and therefore must be addressed immediately.

"As a result, the Anambra State Government hereby orders casino gaming operators in hotels, restaurants and bars to suspend all gaming and casino operations with immediate effect pending the conclusion surveys.

"The government has therefore convened a meeting of all hotel owners and managers in the state on October 21 at the Dora Akunyili Women's Development Center."
