Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Hospital, Amaku Awka, Anambra, Dr. Joe Akabuike has revealed that the hospital spends between 7 and 8 million naira every month to meet its electricity needs .

Akabuike said this at the state House of Assembly complex, Awka, shortly after meeting with the House Committee on Health.

He said the heavy expenditure on diesel is due to the fact that the hospital has machinery and equipment that requires a constant power supply to operate efficiently, as he cannot rely on the utility company. Enugu electricity for power supply.

He added that the hospital cannot afford to take the risk of depending on the EEDC, especially since it mainly deals with emergency situations.

According to him, the hospital bought a liter of diesel at N800 and that some of the machines consumed almost a barrel of diesel to work efficiently.

He also highlighted the need to upgrade most of the hospital structures, adding that through reverse medical tourism, members of the diaspora can partner with the state government for the provision of certain machinery needed to perform certain operations. .

Akabuike called on well-meaning people to adopt buildings in the University Hospital so that there are more structures on the grounds, adding that with his vast experience and expertise, he will lead people to give back operational structures.

Akabuike stressed that he was the originator of primary health care services in Anambra just as he said he encountered what he called vertical and horizontal fragmentations and a total collapse of health care services primary.

He said, “The hospital spends between 7 million Naira and 8 million Naira every month to meet its electricity needs as it could not totally depend on EEDC for power supply. we have a lot of heavy equipment that requires a constant power supply.

“Currently, primary health care centers are not functioning as they should, but I believe what is needed is a sustained effort to make the sector work.

"In order for the PHCs to grow from 63 to 200+, the current administration is determined to provide solutions to the problems concerning primary health care and the health sector in general.

“The hospital was only able to access 40 million naira out of the 700 million naira approved for the facility.”

He pointed out that the hospital still needed structures like a dental unit, a residence for on-call doctors, a dialysis center and a host of other departments to overcome its structural challenges.

"The University Hospital started as a general hospital in 1957 and most of the buildings became old and dilapidated and needed to be replaced with new structures, we call for improvements in the area of ​​hospital funding as it was a major challenge.”
