APC Governors to Meet to Discuss NASS Leadership

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will meet today to discuss the fight for the leadership of the National Assembly.

The leadership said the meeting comes against the backdrop of increased lobbying by some governors to insist on maintaining the zoning arrangement previously reached by the party.

A quoted development source said the meeting would offer appropriate solutions to the lingering crisis

The source said, "We are very confident that when the APC Governors meet tomorrow (today), they will offer quality advice and appropriate solutions to the continuing crisis.

“The party seems to have forgotten that at no time has a system at the level of the chairman of the ruling party leadership successfully endorsed a particular presidential candidate. All steps towards this had always failed and it will be no different.

"Quite honestly, over 80% of governors believe the zoning was done poorly, without proper understanding and consultation, as admitted by the National President.

"But the problem is that some of them are too scared to speak, especially when they hear that Gbajabiamila will be chief of staff. Only the governor of Ondo state has spoken and we congratulate him on what he did. He really nailed it on the head.

“So while we wait patiently, we are not losing our guard because these people are desperate to break our ranks. Several attempts have been made to intimidate us but they have always failed.”

APC, through its APC National Working Committee, had zoned the position of Senate Speaker (South-South, Godswill Akpabio), Senate Deputy Speaker (Northwest, Senator Jibrin Barau) ; Chairman (North West, Hon Tajudeen Abbas); Vice-president (South-East, Benjamin Kalu).

Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who also chairs the Southern Governors Forum, expressed reservations about the zoning arrangement, adding that the decision was unworkable, biased and reinforced injustice and inequality.

The arrangement had since caused tension in the party as aggrieved aspirants protested the decision, just as some party actors insisted on keeping the zoning arrangement.

National party chairman Abdullahi Adamu, however, hinted last week that the zoning arrangement would be reviewed.
