Apple is reportedly planning an iPhone and Apple Watch event for September 7

Three things in life are certain: death, taxes, and new iPhones in September. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that this year's iPhone event will take place on Wednesday, September 7.

According to Gurman, the non-professional iPhone 14 line will drop the size of the 5.4-inch mini-display that Apple has sold for the past two generations. The standard 6.1-inch model will instead be joined by a large-screen 6.7-inch version, matching the screen size of the current iPhone Pro Max model. But these phones will also continue to use the current Apple A15 Bionic chip and externally resemble the iPhone 13.

The iPhone 14 Pro will apparently be more exciting, replacing the current camera notch with a pair of pinhole cutouts for the front camera and FaceID scanner; many Android phones have already switched to similar cutouts to save screen space. The Pro phones would also have a faster chip and an even larger triple-lens camera array anchored by a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera as well as 12-megapixel ultra-wide and telephoto cameras.

Apple also plans to launch new Apple Watches, the report says. The Series 8 watches would include a standard model that resembles the current Series 7, as well as a larger, more "ruggedized" titanium model with longer battery life and additional fitness tracking features.

The base Apple Watch SE would get a faster chip - the current SE uses an Apple S5, and a new one could use an S6, S7, or newer chip that has yet to be announced. Hopefully this new SE model will spell the end of the long life of the Apple Watch Series 3, which the company is still selling even though it won't be getting the watchOS 9 update this fall.

A September 7 announcement for new iPhones and Watches likely means that at least some new devices will be available for purchase around the middle of the month, roughly coinciding with the release of iOS 16. Gurman says that Apple Store employees have been briefed to prepare for a September 16 launch.

Apple often hosts an iPad and Mac-focused event in October to complement the September event, when we expect to see updates to these products and the release of macOS Ventura and Mac. 'iPadOS 16 reportedly delayed. Gurman predicts we'll finally see a USB-C version of the low-end iPad, new M2-based iPad Pros, and updated Mac minis and MacBook Pros before the end of the year.
