Army fires soldiers involved in Goni Aisami murder

The Nigerian army on Saturday fired the two soldiers - John Gabriel and Gideon Adamu - involved in the murder of the famous Islamic cleric Yobe, Goni Aisami.

The soldiers' dismissal was announced at an event held at the 241 RECCE Nguru Battalion, where the soldiers were serving.

The soldiers' dismissal marked the start of their civil trial. They will be referred to the police to be prosecuted for their alleged crime.

Mr. Gabriel confessed to killing Mr Aisami on August 19, 2022 as he attempted to steal his car. The cleric had taken him to a military checkpoint where he was stationed.

The Acting Commanding General of Battalion 241 RECCE I O Sabo, a Lieutenant Colonel, told reporters that the soldiers' action did not reflect the image of the Nigeria Armed Forces.

He noted that the soldiers would be handed over to the police in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, by Sector II headquarters, for civil action against the army.

“Hello gentlemen. You are invited to join the 24i RECCE Battalion Nugu. My name is Lt. Col. I O Sabo, the Acting General Officer Commanding.

"You are all aware of what happened a week ago when our duty personnel in this unit went out to commit atrocities where the Nigerian police arrested them.

“Thanks to Allah Almighty, we were able to do what was necessary. The first phase of what we did was to launch a military police investigation and the report gave us the leeway to sanction them based on the articles of the Armed Forces Acts.

"They are now officially discharged from the Nigerian Army Regiment. We are bringing them back to Sector Headquarters in Damaturu who will now officially hand them over to the Nigerian Police to face their civil prosecution.

“Obviously, these men will never be able to represent us. We are paid by Nigerian taxpayers money to hold arms and defend this country, but these soldiers were not the true reflection of Nigerian army personnel .We want to assure you that we are law abiding citizens and want to bring justice.

“What you see is the dekitting of these soldiers. We are going to recover all the military property in their custody and even send their families out of this place,” Mr. Sabo said.
