Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham: Gunners retain top spot with 10-man derby win over Spurs

Arsenal showed they had come of age on Saturday with a 3-1 win over fierce north London rivals to retain their top spot in the Premier League table.

Mikel Arteta's men had already bottled up their Champions League hopes last season when they lost to City rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Thomas Partey put the Gunners ahead in the 20th minute, but Harry Kane was on hand to restore parity from the penalty spot moments later.

The goal took Kane's tally to 100 away goals in the Premier League and his 44th in the London derbies, usurping Thierry Henry.

While it was all tied at 1-1 at halftime. The hosts had a better performance in the second half where goals from Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka secured the Gunners an emphatic victory.

Referee Anthony Taylor sent off Emerson Royal for a nasty foul on Gabriel Martinelli in the 62nd minute.

Arsenal got off to a great start for Saturday's kick-off as they dominated possession, but against the run of play it was Spurs who nearly took the lead in the 15th minute. Son Heung-min's free kick from the right was pushed through by Eric Dier, but Richarlison's shot was perfectly saved by Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal then broke the deadlock in the 20th minute thanks to their Ghanaian midfielder. Saka, with two men on him, passed downfield to Ben White, who sent it back to Partey who curled a beauty into the top corner to leave Hugo Lloris flailing as Arsenal deservedly moved past.

The goal led to another spell of possession dominance for the Gunners, but on the half-hour Spurs with their first shot on goal were level. Kane scored his 14th goal of the season; sending a penalty after Richarlison was knocked down in the box by Gabriel Magalhaes.

The equalizer gave Spurs confidence and led to their first period of extended possession in the game. Kane forced Ramsdale into action with a header.

With it remaining 1-1 at half-time, Arsenal were back in the lead thanks to Gabriel Jesus three minutes after the restart, following a howl from Lloris.

Arsenal have always looked like the team most likely to extend their lead, which they did after Spurs were reduced to 10 men.

Arsenal lead the Premier League with 21 points from eight games, four ahead of second-placed Manchester City, while Spurs are still third on 17 points.
