ASUU Strike: End of the conflict in sight – Official

President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union would soon end its eight-month strike.

Mr. Osodeke said this during a meeting with House of Representatives leaders on Monday in Abuja.

He said that from what the union saw at the meeting "there is light at the end of the tunnel.

"This time, it is hoped that there will not be people or groups to create problems that could cause the union to fail," he said.

He further hoped that the House leadership's intervention would be the final for the good of the students, adding that ASUU's struggle is about the country's education and university system.

“We hope that in the next few days we will end this strike. We want to have a system where the remuneration is sufficient to attract professors from all over the world to our universities,” Mr. Osodeke said.

He said Nigerian universities should also be paid in hard currency to attract foreign students, while expressing concern about some good professors leaving the country.

“We are the giant of Africa and we must live from it. We thank the speaker for this intervention and we must work together to make every Nigerian proud of the universities we have,” he added .

He said the strike should not have lasted more than two weeks, "if the National Assembly had intervened sooner".

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, said that the intervention of the leaders of the House was successful.

Mr. Gbajabiamila also said the meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari was far-reaching.

He said the president's decision would be made known to the union and the public on October 11.

He said House leaders were able to ensure that all of ASUU's demands for revitalization and salaries, among others, were provided for in the 2023 budget.

He said N470 billion has been included in the 2023 budget to meet the ASUU request.

"The issue of UTAS has been resolved as the government and ASUU have come to an agreement and the two will meet to agree to include all the particularities required by ASUU on the platform of IPPIS payment.

"I think we covered the ground, and that's basically what we agreed on. ASUU would have called off the strike today and hopefully in the next few days.

"We thank ASUU for answering every time we called them.

“We met in my office and it was positive. We did this for the good of our students,” he said
