ASUU strike: Falana backs NLC solidarity protest, says Buhari insensitive to Nigerian difficulties

A human rights activist and lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, has said that he fully supports the solidarity demonstration organized by the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) in favor of the teachers' strike in Nigerian public universities who have been on strike for almost six months.

He said the peaceful protest with the participation of leaders of the NLC and subsidiary unions from the university and other levels of education and many other sectors of the economy was indeed commendable.

Falana made the remark on Tuesday during the NLC rally in Lagos where he fully participated from the Allen Roundabout to the Governor's House to the Alausa Ikeja Secretariat where everyone dispersed around 1:00 p.m. after the handover from the NLC letter to the President to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu representative Mrs. Ajibola Ponle who is Commissioner of Settlement and Training for handover to the Governor.

The protest is aimed at lobbying ASUU demands that bother the federal government on many issues.

Speaking further, Falana accused the All Progressive Congress (APC)-led federal government of what he called insensitivity to the plight of most Nigerians.

He said that with the situation of things, nothing seems to be working again in the country.

He said that the situation of insecurity was getting worse every day, as well as the levels of poverty and hunger which were increasing and the education sector which was deteriorating.

He said the funny thing is that people in the corridors of political power, especially President Muhammadu Buhari, had nothing concrete to offer to get the country back on track.

He said it was more embarrassing that Boko Haram and other criminal elements could hold the entire country hostage, including Abuja, the seat of power, and without any government concrete to deal with the location.

He said that President Buhari would prefer to travel outside the country as he sees fit, as if all was well for the people at home and in the country in general.

He said fraudulent activity, for example, is on the rise in governance, with the president showing no concrete interest in reducing it.

He said however, the president had opened up that he was already tired of governance, he should just strive to leave power alone.

He further explained that public money in the hands of just “10 big looters” in the country could enable Nigeria to fix its education sector, including meeting all the demands of the ASUU and other university workers.

While also decrying how the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has spoiled the naira against the US dollar and other foreign currencies, he said it was high time Nigeria stood up to defend the value of the naira.

He said it was not only unacceptable but also reprehensible that the value of the naira against other currencies continues to decline simply because of unfavorable government policies.

He said that as per the law and Section 16 of the CBN Act, only naira and kobo are legal tender in the country but now that politicians are spending US dollars at will and especially at their rallies, just as has happened at their various party primaries recently.

He, however, urged working people and all other good Nigerians to prepare to elect a set of leaders in the 2023 general elections that would bring real development to the country.
