ASUU strike: Female students are now pregnant, while men are now mechanics - NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has criticized the federal government for the ongoing seven-month strike launched by the University Academic Staff Union, ASUU.

NANS said the strike has endangered the basic human right of Nigerian students, in regards to access to education.

Comrade Olusesi Tolulope Samson, President of Lagos NANS, revealed this on Arise TV's morning show on Tuesday as he answered questions about the student protest at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Monday.

He said the strike has affected the future of their members, noting that some male students have become mechanics; some training printing works; while some female students became pregnant.

"The Federal Government has jeopardized and bastardized the basic human right of Nigerian students. Some came to the protest yesterday with their ID cards, now learning mechanics. Some are learning printing, while some female students are pregnant,” he said.

He noted that the protest held at the airport was meant to alert the international community that something is wrong in Nigeria regarding education.

The student leader said his demand was for the reopening of universities, adding that students were keeping their fingers crossed over what would be the outcome of a proposed meeting between Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila and the leadership of ASUU.
