ASUU strike: NLC praises Gbajabiamila for his intervention

The Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) has commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, for his intervention in the protracted crisis between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government.

NLC President Ayuba Waba eulogized at the inauguration of the guest house of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Products Employers (NUCANMPE), Tuesday in Ijoko, Sango-Ota in Ogun.

The ASUU President and National Leadership met Monday in Abuja over the crisis between university professors and the Federal Government.

“I must commend those who are very proactive in trying to ensure that the real process of social dialogue to resolve the challenges is put in place,” Mr Wabba said.

"At the same time, those who warned people who think that the working relationship is still an old method of master-servant relationship.

"Overall, this perspective has changed, the relationship is now a symbiosis, which requires mutual respect from employers and employees.

"I think that's what Gbajabiamila was playing, I have to commend him for his significant contributions and important roles so that in the end it's a win-win thing.

"I know that when they return to their classrooms, they will be very happy to teach our children, because they are intellectuals and their state of mind will also speak volumes about the impact they have on knowledge.

“I salute the wisdom of the President, there is no point in using cohesion or force to solve the problem, but through a dialogue that will comfort everyone,” he said .

Mr. Waba said he was very pleased with the inauguration of the NUCANMPE guest house projects.

He said development was one of the active ways the union was working to diversify in the face of current economic challenges.

The union leader commended the national president of NUCANMPE, Babatunde Olatunji, for his efforts in carrying out this huge project.

Earlier, Mr. Olatunji, in his address, thanked the NLC National President for gracing the inauguration, saying there was a need to diversify to generate more income for the union.

According to him, the beauty of the project is that the whole world will know that the union leaders are business-oriented.

“This project will let people know that we know what we are doing, the leadership of this union sees the need to diversify and not rely solely on membership dues for income.

"That's why we decided to create this 15-room guest house, as an alternative source of income to the union," he said.

Mr. Olatunji said there is also an ongoing mixed-use shopping complex of over 49 stores, including offices in Ijoko, Sanyo-Ota.
