Australia captain Kerr to miss Falcons clash

Australia captain Sam Kerr will not feature for the Matildas against Nigeria next Thursday in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup after sustaining an injury in training on Wednesday.

As a result, she also missed Australia's opener against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday (yesterday).

The Chelsea star also released a statement after it emerged she will miss Australia's first two matches at the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Kerr revealed that she injured herself in practice on Wednesday.

"I wanted to share this with everyone so we don't get distracted from doing what we came here to do," Kerr wrote.

"Of course, I would have loved to be there tonight, but I can't wait to be part of this incredible journey, which begins now."

The Matildas medical team will reassess Kerr's fitness after next Thursday's clash with Nigeria.

Depending on how the Super Falcons start against Canada on Friday (today), Kerr's absence next Thursday at the Brisbane Stadium could be a boost for Nigeria's qualification from Group B.

Nigeria's third game will be against the Republic of Ireland on July 31.
