Avalon Corp. raised $13 million in funding to create a new, interoperable digital universe. Or maybe you could call it a piece of the metaverse.

The company was founded by game leaders like EverQuest, Call of Duty, Diablo, God of War, Assassin's Creed, and Elden Ring, among others.

The Orlando, Florida-based company believes it has the unique experience among its leaders to solve the problems that creators and designers will face in the near future.

The company is building a platform for games that may one day take advantage of the metaverse. It envisions an interoperable universe, linked by technologies such as game engines and blockchain technology. It doesn't call its own platform a "metaverse" because "we imagine one company can't build this," Avalon CEO Sean Pinnock said in an interview with GamesBeat.

“We envision that in the future, people will work together with tools that make it easier to create worlds and experience those dreams. Those experiences put together could create something like the metaverse,” Pinnock said. .

“We have the opportunity to change the digital world and we believe we are the right team to ensure that these changes benefit both creators and gamers,” Pinnock said. "We know that engagement is driven by play, creativity, and human connectivity, all critical elements sorely lacking in most self-proclaimed metaverses, and that's exactly why the inevitable confluence of technology that will emerge as the metaverse is built by game developers.”

Avalon raised $13 million.

Jeffrey Butler, Chief Product Officer, said in an interview with GamesBeat, "We want it to be more than one company. I don't think just one company. company can really create the technology for the metaverse. It's going to take multiple partners, generative AI, NPC AI, tool creation, and all the different technologies coming together and creating a perfect storm."

Pinnock stated that a metaverse should be an interoperable universe with worlds within it, such as Ready Player One's Oasis with various intellectual properties among those worlds. Creators can build these different worlds and have interoperability between them.

"We tried to avoid using the word metaverse because it's been getting a bit of a beat lately," Butler said. "We laugh that Kentucky Fried Chicken is creating a metaverse."

Pinnock said the company would allow other creators to create worlds in its universe, but Avalon would also build its own things.

"We develop technologies that really facilitate the deployment of content that we create...
