Ebonyi bakers to withdraw their services

The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), Ebonyi Chapter, announces that it will withdraw its services in the state from July 13, as directed by its national body.

Felix Eze, president of the association in Ebonyi revealed this on Saturday in Abakaliki after his action meeting scheduled to last two weeks.

Mr. Eze said the removal from service was necessitated by the federal government's alleged insensitivity to the plight of bakers across the country, which had hurt their business.

"The prices of bakery materials are steadily increasing, as a bag of flour that used to cost N25,000 now costs more than N27,000.

"We don't get into measurement at the expense of our customers, but to help them and improve our business," he said.

The state chairman urged the federal government to urgently address challenges to ensure bakers conscientiously render their services to the people.

"The government should reduce relevant taxes and control the ever-increasing exchange rate of foreign currencies.

"Producers of bakery products claim that such an increase influences the prices of materials.

“The government should ensure that producers have access to foreign currency at low rates, as baked goods are among the cheapest food items citizens have access to,” he said.< /p> ALSO READ: Bread prices set to rise further as bakers brace for strike

Félix Chimerèze, the association's secretary of state, said his colleagues had decided to act now after having long deplored the situation.

"Nigerians are aware of the dire economic situation in the country and the additional challenges that have necessitated our action.

"We urge our customers to support us as normality will return once the issues are resolved," he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on July 6, the association's South East Zonal leadership ordered zonal states to comply with the national body's directive on withdrawal from service.
