Bitcoin (BTC) adoption in West Africa is dominated by Nigeria, the crypto powerhouse and economic engine of the region. But amid anti-French sentiment, educational efforts around Bitcoin are also bubbling in Francophone West Africa.

Senegal recently opened its first physical Bitcoin exchange and education center called Bitique, and the country of 17 million will host another Bitcoin forum in the capital, Dakar, in December, where a local advocate pseudonym of Bitcoin, known as Nourou, runs an independent Bitcoin Node sent from space.

In Benin, a country of 13 million people located west of Nigeria, the Bitcoin Mastermind conference, exclusively dedicated to Bitcoin, will take place next month. The first of its kind in the country, Bitcoin Mastermind brings together Bitcoin entrepreneurs and crypto enthusiasts from local groups and businesses such as Izichange, GoesPay, and Flash, and provides a space for locals to learn more about Bitcoin.

Cointelegraph spoke with Nourou, the founder of Dakar Bitcoin Days and Bitcoin Senegal, and Loïc Kassamoto, the founder of Bitcoin Mastermind, to better understand the evolution or revolution of Bitcoin and western cryptocurrency -African.

Francophone West African countries are subject to the West African currency of the CFA franc, described by The Economist as a “colonial hangover”. Senegalese are outspoken critics of the currency, with some Bitcoin proponents, like local crypto enthusiast and entrepreneur Mama Bitcoin, explaining that it's quite normal to complain about the currency – an implicit critique of French post-colonial politics in the region .
