'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' tops 2023 NAACP Image Awards nominations

The 2023 NAACP Image Awards nominations are in! The annual ceremony announced this year's group of nominees on January 12, recognizing talent, creativity and pioneers in film, television, music, streaming, podcasts, literature and social justice. . “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” leads the pack with 12 nominations, nods for filmmaker Ryan Coogler, dynamic cast, costume designer Ruth Carter, hairstylist Camille Friend and Rihanna for her original end credits song, "Lift Me Up."

Lagging behind the Marvel blockbuster are Gina Prince-Bythewood's 'The Woman King' and 'Abbott Elementary' leading the TV race, with the two projects earning nine nominations each. Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Lizzo, Angela Bassett, Quinta Brunson, Keke Palmer, Sterling K. Brown, Danielle Deadwyler, Regina Hall and Tracee Ellis Ross are among the other notable individual nominees with multiple accolades.

This year, the 54th NAACP Image Awards will return with an in-person audience at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles with three new categories for the winners: Outstanding Hairstyle, Outstanding Makeup, and Outstanding Costume Design. All of these recognize the innovation in some of the most notable TV shows and movies of the past year, including "Wakanda Forever", "Emancipation", "The Woman King" and "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars". /p>
