BMW recalls 83 iX and i4 electric vehicles due to battery fire issues

BMW is recalling 83 iX and i4 vehicles after investigating multiple battery fires involving the two electric vehicles. In a notice spotted by Autoblog, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns owners of certain iX xDrive 50, iX M60, i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 vehicles not to drive, charge or park it indoors.

After first investigating an overseas incident involving a 2022 i4 eDrive in April, BMW has discovered a manufacturing defect with certain Samsung SDI battery cells in iX models produced between December 2, 2021 and on June 30, 2022, and i4 models built between November 22, 2021 and June 13, 2022.

BMW has already notified dealers of the recall. The car manufacturer will replace the batteries of the affected vehicles free of charge. BMW adds that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries due to the faulty battery. Affected owners can expect to receive a notification letter by September 19. You can also contact BMW Support in advance for more information.

For those concerned about a possible repeat of the situation experienced by Chevy Bolt owners with GM, it should be noted that BMW sources batteries for its iX and i4 electric vehicles from two manufacturers: CATL and Samsung SDI. In contrast, GM sourced the Bolt's battery from LG Chem before announcing a global recall in 2021.
