Boy arrested for fighting dies in police custody

A boy identified as Uchenna Okafor is believed to have died after being arrested and taken into custody at Akwuzu Police Station in Anambra State.

A social justice activist shared the story on his Twitter account. The Twitter user claimed that three boys were arrested last week for fighting and their parents were alerted to the incident.

According to the Twitter user, Uchenna's parents have been asked to contribute 150,000 Naira for their son's release. Unfortunately, when they arrived at the station on Thursday, they were informed that their son had passed away.

Nigeria Police Spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, while reacting to the Tweet, said, “I have requested the Spokesperson of Anambra State Police Command to review the question and come back, please."

Anambra State Police Spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, while responding in a statement on Monday, said, "While we are reviewing the allegation, the information I dispose is not a case of two fights as alleged, but a case of armed robbery.

"The Twitter manager should be in charge this morning with more facts. Also, the IPO handling the case is expected with his brief this morning. Thank you."
