JUST IN: Judge sends human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong to jail

Akwa Ibom State Chief Justice Ekaette Obot sent human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong to jail.

Mr. Effiong, who is handling a case for his client at Judge Obot's court in Uyo, revealed this in a message he posted on his WhatsApp status around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday.

"I was sent to Uyo Jail by the Chief Justice of Akwa Ibom State, Judge Ekaette Obot, for a month for defending Leo Ekpenyong in a defamation suit brought by the Governor Udom Emmanuel,” Mr Effiong said in the WhatsApp message.

The lawyer, who is based in Lagos, traveled to Uyo for the case.

Another lawyer for Uyo confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that the judge handed down the prison sentence against Mr. Effiong.

Mr. Effiong later posted details of the incident on his Twitter page.

“Akwa Chief Justice Akwa Ibom ordered a journalist from the Premium Times to leave the court. observe the proceedings. My Lord has instructed me to conduct the cross-examination,” he wrote.

"I'm going to Uyo Correctional Center now. I haven't done anything. I haven't even had a chance to say anything before the 'sentence'. appealed to the Hon. Chief Justice, but my lord insisted that I be imprisoned."

Judge Obot in previous proceedings ordered court officials to temporarily seize the phones of journalists and others in the courtroom, ostensibly to prevent the proceedings from being recorded in secret.
