JUST IN: Police commission union declares indefinite strike

The Joint Congress of Unions for the Police Services Commission has issued an indefinite strike notice to the board's management for violating the agreement.

The union has noted that the strike will begin effective Monday, August 29, 2022.

The President of the Joint Service Union, PSC Chapter, Mr. Adoyi Adoyi revealed this in an interview with our correspondent on Thursday.

The notice comes amid a disagreement between commission workers, commission chairman Mr Musiliu Smith and Inspector General of Police Usman Baba over which body should be responsible for the recruitment, promotion and appointment of gendarmes and officers.

He noted that the IGP and other police chiefs, in collusion with the Chairman of the CPS, overruled the constitutional duty of the CPS.

Adoyi added that the IGP would have taken it upon himself to perform the duties of the CPS in blatant disregard of the Nigerian Constitution, a verdict of the Court of Appeal and the CPS authorities.

Adoyi said: "We are going on an indefinite strike from Monday 29th August to show how much dissatisfaction with the way the CPS is run by the chairman of the commission and the blatant disregard for the constitution, the court of law, and the CPS by the IGO, Usman Baba.

"The duties of the CPS are spelled out in the constitution, but the IGP ignored all that and took over the duties of the commission. It appoints and promotes at will contrary to what is stipulated in the constitution.

"According to the constitution, the appointment, promotion and recruitment of police officers and gendarmes are the prerogative of the PSC, not the IGP."
