Ahead of massive 'anti-tourism' protests in the Canary Islands, locals say they "love" the British and that tourists are welcome - but that the money is not flowing freely and that the number of rental accommodation is destroying the market for those who live on the archipelago.

Anti-tourism protests are expected to take place in the Canary Islands of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Palma on April 20.

Activists and environmentalists warned last week that residents are being forced to live in their cars - and even caves - due to the impact of large tourist operators, who are "consuming" the area .

Before the protests, Tenerife residents and the island's tour operators said British tourists were still "very welcome" and that the real problem was a lack of housing, with protesters calling on the government to take action.

Speaking to the travel agency, Tenerife local Samantha Hasala, said: “People here are fighting, protesting because there are a lot of people - landlords - who just rent [their properties. ] for the holidays and it destroys the market for us who live here.
