Buhari nominates NHRC boss for reappointment

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), has written to the Senate to confirm that Anthony Ojukwu is reappointed as Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission.

According to the letter read in plenary session by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Tuesday, the reappointment is for five years and would be Ojuku's last term in office.

The letter reads: "In accordance with the provisions of section 7(2) of the National Human Rights Commission (Amendment) Act 2010, I am writing to transmit, for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Mr. Anthony Ojukwu, SAN, for his reappointment as Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, for a final term of 5 years.

"Although I hope that the Senate will review and confirm the appointment in the usual and expeditious manner. Please accept, Mr. President of the Senate, the assurances of my highest consideration."

Furthermore, in another letter dated February 1, 2023, the President also requested confirmation of the appointment of Hon. Justice Stanley Lawal, as President of the Abuja Customary Court of Appeal.

The confirmation, according to the President, is in accordance with Section 266 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The letter reads: "I am pleased to transmit for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Hon. Justice Stanley, Adekunle Lawal, Acting President of the Capital Territory Customary Court of Appeal Federal, Abuja, as President of the Tribunal.

"I trust that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual and expeditious manner. Please accept, Distinguished Speaker of the Senate, the assurances of my highest consideration."
