The Middle Belt Forum has said that the ruling All Progressives Congressional presidential standard bearer may struggle to convince Nigerians to vote for him in the upcoming general election due to the poor performance of the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired).

Buhari had said during his recent visit to Imo State that his regime had performed "extremely well", given the limited resources at its disposal, noting that it deserved praise from Nigerians.

The president also praised his government for "dislodging Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast and tackling the decaying infrastructure he said he inherited from the administration of Opposition Peoples Democratic Party in 2015".

Reacting, MBF President Dr Bitrus Pogu, who called Buhari's statement laughable and misinformed, said it looked like the president might have "lost touch with the reality of the state of the nation" to make such a statement.

Pogu also noted that the president's performance had damaged the APC's image and reduced the party's candidate's chances in the upcoming elections.

In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Pogu said: "The APC as a party has been chipped by the performance of the president. So people have to think twice before voting. They can't be fooled three times. They may have done it twice, but certainly not in 2023.

"Buhari's statement that he did well is laughable. Perhaps his lieutenants are misinforming him. All Nigerians know the situation. Before he came, it was just a North East affair.

“Today is a national affair. People weren't kidnapped for ransom on such a large scale back then. Today we have seen bandits take over towns and villages in this country.

“He can be protected by his lieutenants; therefore, he does not know the true position of things. In every way – economy, security, health, education – things are worse than they have ever been. He is misinformed of events in Nigeria.

"When it arrived, a dollar was worth around 198 naira; today it is around N710 and it counts. Everyone can clearly see that they are not in contact with the He should leave this misinformed position and come to the real world.

"Even leading members of the APC will think twice before voting for this ruling party again in 2023. Those who supported Buhari before will not do so for the candidate of the APC and that is unfortunate Nigerians are not a bunch of fools,” he noted.

Also speaking, the Executive Director of the Adopt a Goal initiative, Mr. Atoye Ariyo-Dare, told our correspondent that Tinubu would only benefit from the feelings of the people and an opportunity buying votes.

"Apart from these two factors, Tinubu may not be able to win the 2023 elections," he noted.
