CAF Women's Champions League: Nigeria's Delta Queens advance to final in dramatic five-goal thriller

Delta Queens of Nigeria beat Athletico FC of Abidjan, Ivory Coast 3-2 on Monday to advance to the final of the CAF Women's Champions League qualifiers for Zone B of the UFAO.

The CAF Women's Champions League qualifiers were held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

The two West African clubs were looking to grab the only spot to represent the zone in the next stage of the continental competition.

The Delta ladies fell behind five minutes into the game when Melissa Behinan scored for the Ivorians, giving them the lead.

Any effort by the Delta Queens to equalize before the end of the first half hit a brick wall.

Their efforts paid off in the second half when substitute Mercy Omokwo scored with a shot in the 62nd minute.

The stalemate forced the game into extra time, when in the 98th minute Omokwo scored for Delta Queens after superbly beating the Athletico defense to register another goal.

Delta Queens captain Taiwo Afolabi made it 3-1 for the hosts in first half extra time injury time, dimming the Ivorians' hopes.

Joy Sunday, however, made it 3-2 when she scored a goal five minutes from time to console the Abidjan side.

Meanwhile, Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu had pledged Delta Queens N1 million for every goal scored in the game.

Shaibu made the pledge shortly before the team qualified for the semi-finals to boost the performance of the Nigerian girls.
