The Christian Association of Nigeria has advised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde not to reject Pastor Afolabi Olaoye popularly known as Ghandi as the next Soun d 'Ogbomoso because he is not a Muslim.

The president of the CAN in Ogbomoso, Joseph Adegoke, said so in an interview with our correspondent on Monday.

Ghandi, who is the pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus House, Washington, USA, was chosen by the kingmakers in Ogbomoso and his name was sent to the governor for his approval, but the governor had not yet approved his selection.

Some townspeople are concerned that the governor has not approved or rejected Ghandi since his name was presented to him a few months ago.

But the chief imam of Ogbomoso, Sheikh Teliat Ayilara, in a video seen by our correspondent, said he had told the governor last Ramadan that he should not simply endorse anyone without consultation.

The chief imam said he was grateful to the governor for not approving which he said "is not satisfactory for us".

The chief imam could not be reached but his personal assistant, who identified himself as R.K. Teliat, when contacted about the veracity of the video, told our correspondent that the imam had spoken in the video last Friday at the Ogbomoso Residence of Oyo State Governor's Chief of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi.

The imam in the video said: "Regarding the selection of a new soun from Ogbomoso, I told the governor that he should not just approve anyone without the consultation required.

"You would think that the governor did not understand me when I said that, but he did. For this reason, I thank our governor for not endorsing what does not does not satisfy us."

The president of CAN in the Ogbomoso zone, Adegoke, contacted by our correspondent, said he was surprised to hear what the chief imam said.

He said: "I was surprised at what he said, that shouldn't be the case. The kingmakers chose him (Ghandi) after he had been appointed by its ruling house. So hearing that surprised us CAN members.

"That is not correct. Our call is for the governor to make the announcement without further delay. Given that the ruling house has approved his nomination, I believe the governor would have made some conclusions about it."

The leader of the Ogbomoso kingmakers, Chief Sobalaje Otolorin, previously told The PUNCH that they had submitted a name to the governor and the people are waiting its announcement about it.

The throne became vacant following the death of the last Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, on December 12, 2021 at the age of 95 after reigning for approximately 48 years.
