Canada Goose launches re-commerce in Canada and details a PFAS-free future

On Thursday, Canada Goose launched its "Canada Goose Generations" re-commerce platform in Canada.< /p >

This launch follows the re-commerce launch in the US earlier this year, and the new came alongside the company's ESG reporting and goals platform "Humanature".

Among captions, the outerwear maker has pledged to phase out PFAs, or "chemicals forever", starting with its base material "Arctic Tech". No alternatives have been named, although research has focused on a lesser impact. The brand has set short-term, sharp reduction targets with the Science Based Targets Initiative, although Scope 3 (indirect) has not yet been publicly formalized for the vertically integrated manufacturer. As noted, Canada Goose reduced its scope 1 and 2 emissions (or direct operations) by nearly 45% year over year. The company's goal is to achieve net zero emissions by reducing its direct impact by 80% by 2025 by upgrading manufacturing plants and investing in global renewable energy credits, as well as in purchased offsets.

As for materials, Canada Goose said it transferred more than 75% of its materials to Preferred Fibers and Materials (PFM), as defined by the Textile Exchange organization. The definition includes recycled, organic or plant-based materials, among other criteria. For product innovations, this wraps its “Kind Fleece”, which uses 62% recycled wool, 18% Tencel, 13% Sorona and 7% polyamide. (That even includes fur, as Canada Goose pledged to stop all new fur manufacturing last year). Packaging was another milestone, nearly 86% complete in its goal to shift all packaging to "more sustainable solutions" by 2025.

In recent advancements, the ambitious jacket maker has made charitable contributions to causes such as Polar Bears International, or $1,072,325 in fiscal year 2022, plus wartime relief (and jacket donations) for affected communities in Ukraine. Canada Goose, together with reverse logistics partner Debrand, diverted 61% of its global in-warranty waste (out-of-warranty jackets) from landfill in fiscal year 2022, resulting in the recycling or donation of 3,430 clothes. The majority of this clothing (53% of total warranty waste) was donated to communities in Northern Canada and Ukraine.

Some goals are still in progress though. The brand has pledged to phase out single-use plastics (like shrink wrap) by the end of 2022, but work is still ongoing. The same goes for its renewable energy commitments and Tier 1 factory assessments (including social performance program updates) which have also stalled. The brand said COVID-19 was part of the disruption.

On milestones so far, Gavin Thompson, Senior Vice President of Corporate Citizenship at Canada Goose, said more change is ahead. “We continue to actively transform our business, while remaining true to our goal of keeping the planet cold and people warm. I am proud of our employees and grateful to our partners, who join us in our commitment to this. ."
