Champions League: Messi, Mbappé crash out with PSG as Milan knock out Spurs

Striking duo Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé couldn't save PSG from another Champions League misery as the French club were edged out in the Round of 16 by Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The Bundesliga giants who won the first leg in Paris by a single goal followed that up 2-0 in the second leg at the Allianz Arena to progress with a 3-0 aggregate score.

While Kingsley Coman scored in the first leg, Eric Choupo-Moting and Sergi Gnabry were the heroes in the second leg; sealing Bayern's place in the quarter-finals with two second-half goals.

PSG will themselves be responsible for the first conceded goal in Munich which effectively sealed their Champions League fate this season.

Bitshabu gave the ball to Marco Verratti in his own box and the midfielder lingered too long in possession. Thomas Muller skillfully pushed the ball away from him and put it down to Leon Goretzka who touched it towards goal before sending a square pass to Choupo-Moting to tap and write his name on the scoresheet.

Choupo-Moting now has four goals in six Champions League appearances this season and would be hoping for more as Bayern chase glory to the finish.

Interestingly, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann brought in Leroy Sane to replace striker Eric Choupo-Moting in the 69th minute.

Sane's inclusion almost paid off in the 75th minute after he forced his way into PSG's penalty area but missed his effort from inside the box.

Hardly as PSG tried to find a way back into the game, they were either subdued by Bayern's well-prepared defense or the goalkeeper.

As time passed, Sadio Mane was appointed to replace Jamal Musiala.

It was a pleasure to see the Senegalese back in action after a stint on the sidelines which, among other things, kept him out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

While it looked like 1-0 on the night would be enough for Bayern to pull through, Gnabry in the 89th minute added one more goal to pile the misery on Messi, Mbappé and their other team-mates.

This is the first time in his entire career that Messi will miss playing in the Champions League quarter-final in consecutive seasons.

In the other game of the evening, AC Milan came to London, saw and conquered Tottenham Hotspur.

After winning the first leg by a single goal at the San Siro, AC Milan fought back to a barren draw in the second leg to advance to the quarter-finals.
