Chanel RTW Spring 2023

For an American actress, Kristen Stewart does a nasty existential monologue. Chanel opened its show with a black-and-white clip, shown on panoramic screens, of the "Spencer" star walking out of an art house cinema in Paris and answering a reporter's question with some thoughts on the meaning of life.

"We live in a period of growth so accelerated that it gives me a boost", has she started.

"It's exhilarating and very pressurized because our identities are these ever-changing art projects", Stewart said. "It's no longer important who you are or even what you want. I think it's important to burn off the best of yourself yesterday, every day, so you can start over."

It could have been a dialogue from one of the films she made with French director Olivier Assayas, making her the first American actress to win a non-honorary César at the prestigious French cinema awards.

Chanel contributed costuming and funding to many of these projects, highlighting the strength of its relationship with Stewart, who has been an ambassador for the French fashion house since 2013. The actress, sporting a Joan Jett-esque pixie cut, was the face of the spring 2023 collection press kit.

"She really represents for me the Chanel of today, but the Coco Chanel", the artistic director Virginie Viard says in a preview. "On top of that, she looks very French."

Cinema is a key source of inspiration for Viard, who began her career as a costume designer, working on films including "Three Colors: Blue" by Krzysztof Kieślowski. Building a collection around Stewart hasn't been easy, she said. "I don't want to disappoint her."

She didn't have to worry. The actress has worked the looks to perfection, whether she's posing in an Art Nouveau-style brasserie in a black monogram dress with a side slit tied with a black satin bow on one hip, or standing in a dress flared white tweed coat on the mirrored Art Deco staircase of Chanel's historic haute couture salon, rue Cambon.

Stewart, who sat front row, embraced all facets of the brand's collections, from the eccentric to the sublime. “She never asks to change anything. She gets it all,” Viard said, snapping his fingers for emphasis.
