"He has nborn the n person, the journalist I became because we were given the time and the tools."

Charlene White joined 1Xtra as journalist in 2002 - the year the station was launched.

In 2005, she partnered with DJ G Money as the presenter of the program of news, magazine and two-hour documentary from the station.< /p>

She has since become the first black woman to present ITV's News at Ten and also regularly hosts Loose Women.

But for Charlene, her time with 1Xtra is something she remembers fondly because it gave her the confidence to "fighting for the stories" that matter.

'Keep on being me'

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat during the week of the 20th anniversary of 1Xtra, Charlene said working there had a significant impact on her approach.

"My mum was a social worker. So I fight for people whose voices tend to be silenced," she says.

"It's always been in me to do, but 1Xtra gave me the confidence to do it and the way I have continued to do it in my career."
